HISTORY OF MARBLES.
In the Roman Age the abundance of stone and marble in the area of Botticino allowed to all social classes to afford inscriptions on stone and left a rich collection of epigraphs. The marble workshops reached high technology levels, so that marble extraction and working became an industrial activity.
The pits were opened on the east side of Trinità point and the marble blocks were laid there after the extraction. Then, the marble was cut and carried to workshops or building sites.
Some villages for marble workers and their families probably rose around these pits.
Botticino marble and some other imported marbles were used in local workshops for art and craft works to decorate public buildings in the town.
A capital of 1st century b.C. is the most ancient Botticino marble handmade piece created in the area of Brescia. During the Imperial Age the white Botticino marble was widespread. It was used in projects of reconstruction and building. The area became famous for its marble production and working skills. Both raw marble and finished pieces were sold abroad on the international market.
Marble blocks and works were exported all around the world.
Marble industry developed the production skills of the population living in this area. It has represented for them a favourable opportunity for work and economic growth.
At the beginning of 19th century marble blocks were extracted in Botticino and then worked in Rezzato.
The Cooperatives were the first extraction companies that managed marble production and contributed to the specialization of young workers in this field.
